The Thoreau Weekend Food Bag program started in the Fall of 2019 and provides a bag of two nutritious meals, healthy snacks and beverages each Friday during the school year for at-need Thoreau Elementary School students to eat over the weekend. The goal of the program is to reduce food insecurity and help students return to school on Monday ready to learn. he program is a collaboration of four local congregations, two corporate partners, and the Nakoma League, one of the neighborhood associations.  For more information about student eligibility contact Thoreau Social Worker Laura Glaub at  If you wish to volunteer in helping to pack and deliver bags of food, email Food for Thought at
