New Floors, Roofs and Steel: See What’s New in the 2024 Facilities Referendum Construction

Sherman Middle School & Shabazz High School

What’s New

Construction is moving ahead at both Sherman Middle School and Shabazz High School. At Shabazz, crews have poured concrete slabs in several areas, with one final slab-on-grade pour remaining before work moves to the Sherman side.

At Sherman, steel erection and decking are complete in the southern half of the building, while crews prepare for concrete pours. Exterior framing and sheathing are also progressing along the building, and crews are installing systems for mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection.

What’s Coming Next

Crews will complete the gymnasium roof decking, finish the remaining concrete pour at Shabazz and continue work to enclose the buildings with air and vapor barriers.

Did You Know?

Thousands of individual steel members must be erected, bolted, welded and connected before concrete can be poured for the floors.

Black Hawk Middle School & Gompers Elementary School

What’s New

Construction continues to take shape across the Black Hawk and Gompers site. Crews recently poured the concrete slab for the small gym, as well as the slab for the upper-level office and library.

Structural steel and roof work are progressing throughout the building, while framing and sheathing continue in the southern classroom wings. Underground plumbing and electrical work is also underway.

What’s Coming Next

Crews will continue underground electrical and plumbing work, begin roofing over the elementary classroom wing and continue structural steel, exterior framing and sheathing throughout the building. Concrete work is also planned for the large gymnasium and lower-level southeast classroom wing.

Did You Know?

Parapets — the low walls that extend above a roof — were originally used to help defend castles. Today, they can help conceal rooftop equipment, slow the spread of fire and provide fall protection.
