MMSD Caps Stellar Year of Athletics with Wins at State Track & Field Championships
MMSD is proud to celebrate the accomplishments of student-athletes Jay Coleman and Hayden Smith, who delivered exceptional performances at the 2025 Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) State Track & Field Championships, held at the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse.
Coleman, a standout senior from East High School, captured two state titles—first place in the Girls 100 Meter Dash Wheelchair and the 1600 Meter Run Wheelchair—and added a second-place finish in the 800 Meter Run and a fifth-place finish in the Shot Put. Their achievements mark a remarkable conclusion to a season defined by determination, resilience and elite-level competition.
Representing Vel Phillips Memorial High School, sophomore Hayden Smith made an impressive showing in the Boys Wheelchair Division, coming in third in the 100 Meter Dash, third in the 1600 Meter Run, and fifth in the 400 Meter Dash.
“These athletes exemplify the spirit of perseverance and excellence that defines MMSD athletics,” said Jeremy Schlitz, MMSD’s athletic director. “Jay and Hayden are not just strong competitors, they’re leaders who’ve inspired their peers and school communities throughout the year. We’re incredibly proud of their performances at state and the hard work it took to get there.”
This year’s WIAA State Track & Field Championships provided a fitting conclusion to a successful year of athletic competition across the District, one marked by individual milestones, team achievements and a commitment to inclusive participation in sports.
“As we wrap up another memorable year, we celebrate not only our medalists but all of our student-athletes and coaches,” Schlitz added. “From fall to spring, our programs continue to build champions—on the field, in the classroom and in our community.”
